Reisverslag Thanksgiving Break
3 december 2013
And I feel like I'm forgetting Dutch to.... If people ask me to translate words or something into Dutch I have to think about it. It's sometimes hard to switch from Englisch to Dutch. When I was skyping to my parents a few weeks ago I even started using Englisch words cause I didn't know how I had to say those things in Dutch anymore. It's weird to notice these kind of things, but that's part of the exchange year I guess.
But it's not that bad I can still talk Dutch and if people ask me simple, normal stuff I can translate it right away. But hearing americans speak Dutch is so much fun! Really hearing them say: Ik hou van jou sounds like Chinese or Japense. And then letting them say my name in Dutch. They are not used to our R and can barely say it right, it's really funny. But everybody just says my name in Englisch. Except for Dallas and Sierra if they yell at me in the hallway they yell it in Dutch and it sounds like crap but also really funny. So yeah in the Netherlands I had nicknames like saar and saartje. Here my nickname is the weird Dutch way of saying my name. And Kelby calls me Brit, cause he is alwasy goofing around I'm from freaking Britain. And then people at track call me Neverland. Really they'll be like: Hé Neverland can you grap that for me. And at school people sometimess say yeah that Dutch girl when I walk by or the Netherlandisch girl. It's funny, really it is.
And this week I just realize that four months have already past.... It is weird how fast a girl can feel at home somewhere. If I'm talking to my friends in class it feel like I've been with them since Freshmen year, but it has only been for like four moths. And I have made some great friends here! When a few weeks ago not long after my last blog something kind of messed up happened, and I felt like crap, my friends were really sweet to me and at that point I really realized how great they were for me! Getting to math feeling down, sitting down next to Dallas and getting some cookies and a twix. Looking up at her and see her smiling at me because she knew how I felt and what would make me feel better. And not only at school but I feel like I'm surrounded with some great people, and I'm really greatfull for that!
Last time I wrote something I said that we won't have any football games anymore but at that point I was a little bit wrong. Cause after that we still had playoffs and played a few more games. So we had antoher pep rally and some games. I didn't go to this one but we did win some. But last week we lost so now the football season is definately over and no more games for our boys.
So soccer season started and yes people in the Netherlands might be suprized but I did go to a game already. I didn't really feel like going to the soccer game but some of my friends wanted me to go with them.... So after some begging I went with them. But you could notice soccer is not a big sport in the States at all! There were barely people watching the game.
For soccer there are two teams Varsity and junior Varsity. Varsity is a higher group then junior varsity. But me and my other exchange friends had no idea about these differents and after wondering for a long time why my friends weren't playing you notice after the game they still had to play. But well we were already being picked up so unfortunately I couldn't see my firends play. But well I was there and I could notice they really did like/appreciate it I came to watch them and after explaning why I didnt watch there game they were okay with it. But next time when we have a home game I'll dress better. Cause I was freezing my ass of at the game. It was so freaking cold from sitting on those bleechers. So yeah those boys should be happy with a girl sitting in the bleechers on a Monday night watching soccer while she is freezing for them. hahahahah just kidding!
What else happened these few weeks...?? Well I went to the soccer game at the 18th and that week nothing else special really happened. Everybody was excited for the break that was coming. Cause yeah we did have antoher break. I really do notice we have a lot of breaks and days of in the US. So everybody all excited to get off for a whole week again. I didn't really do anything special this break. I just spent some time with my family and stayed at home a lot. We did go to church of course and because it was close to thanksgiving we had a Thanksgiving dinner at church which was really nice. As a youthgroup we also raised some money. We sold desserts at the dinner and the money went to our youthgroup of course. Also everyone from youthgroup got 'sold'. People could 'buy' us to help them for a day in and around the house to raise money. I was sold for $40! And all I had to do was taking care of a dog. It was already planned that my family had to take of a dog but now they let me do it. I had to feed the dog and let him outside. Easy job!!
The other thing I did was hanging out with Dallas a afternoon. It's nice how simple things are here in the US. Just text your friend what she is doing, she says nothing and says you want me to pick you up. So within 3 minutes she picks you up from your house. That's a really nice thing that people can dirve here on a younger age. And what do me and Dallas like to do? We like to eat. So at here place you just grap a cup of chocolate ice cream out of the freezer and just eat half of it by yourself. And she had to run to the store real quick, so at the store I just grabbed some chips and a pack of cookies and a drink and you finish all that crap to (I did share with Dallas, I'm not that bad.....LOL). No wonder I start gaining weight.
The day after that was Thanksgiving! And again: Eating. This was just a great day. I woke up with a great feeling. Feeling all happy! Just imagine waking up while your mom is making a huge meal and the whole house smells like meat. Your sisters all all excited and some nice shows on tv. First watching one direction perform on tv. And that may sound weird to you but in the Netherlands I was watching those kind of performances on youtube and now I could just watch that one live tv! For me that was just really cool! After that we watched the Macy's parade and also that was fun to watch! And then around 11 you start to eat. And really I was stuffed after that!! And what i an American thing to do after eating? Taking a nap... So yeah, I just went to bed at the middle of the day and slept for like an hour. I was so stuffed I couldn't even lay on my belly, it was nuts! So yeah and then you wake up and you make yourself a second plate.... Later that evening we went to a 'party' of a college of my hostmom. They had all the flyers for Black Friday. Cause yeah the day after Thanksigving is Black Friday and all the stores have HUGE sales. Unfortunately a lot of the sales already start on Thursday this year but it was still great! So you wake up the next mornign at 6 AM to get some sales. In one of the flyers I saw a game my little sisters have been talking about for months so I had to buy that one for them!! Cause yeah Chrismas is coming and I have to start getting presents. We didn't really experience the crazy Black Friday, but me and my hostmom got some great deals without people getting crazy! And what do you eat the day after Thanksgiving? Leftovers. And the day after that? Leftovers. Really for the next few weeks I can't anymore Turkey hahaha. Just kidding!
And then the break is already over. We went to church agian on Sunday. And for Christmas we had something going on in church that you could buy presents for homeless people and me and my hostmom did that during Black Friday shopping. We had some cards with wishes from homeless people and bought some stuff for them! Sunday they were wrapped up at church and we also had a babyshower. But we were all kind of sick (my nose is still stuffy but other then that I'm good) so we didn't stay for the baby shower. We did buy some gifts but just gave them and left.
I completely forgot! The first weekend of the break my hostdad took me out! Hahaha sounds weird..?? I really wanted to see the Hunger Games and so did he. At the time when I felt kind of sad my hostdad asked me if I wanted to go and see the movie with him and of course you say YES! Some other friends also asked me to go with them but I felt like I had to do this with him. First he took me to outback. A really good steakhouse (the same one I went to before homecoming) and after that we went to the movie. I loved the movie! Hated the end though....... I won't say anyhting about he movie in case people haven't seen it yet. I had a great night and thought it was really sweet of him to take me with him!
So yeah and then the break was over and you go back to school. At school everybody is talking about the Finals and christmas break. Cause after a week break you go to school for two and a half week and you have another break...... Sounds normal right?? LOL
And like I said the finals are coming. The semester is almost over so we have finals. It's a big test to wrap up the first two semesters and that means we have new subjects and everything after Chirstmas break. I am excited for the new subjects but also really sad that the first two semesters end. Cause that means my friend Dallas is leaving to Ohio......
So I try to spent as much time with her as I can and of course I'll buy her a nice Christmas present! That's normal here buying your friends presents for Christmas. I figured I take her to a store she really likes and let her pick anyhting she wants! I mean she does deserve a nice present considered how many times she took me with her to track and just being my awesome friend! She does teach me a lot of bad words and I have to watch my mouth when I get back, cause I'm used to say a lot of 'bad ' words. It's not that bad, it's kind of funny we think. We call each other names I'm not gonna write down here... LOL
And like I said almost Christmas break is coming, and our first day is December 18!!! That means no school on my Birthday!!! I don't have anything planned for my birthday yet but Dallas came uo with the idea to do a bonfire at her place. A bonfire is a big campfire, and that sounds of course really fun to do!
Ohter then that nothing really happened the last few weeks! I did forget to tell you guys that hunting is a big thing here! Cause I do live in the country and that means hunting..... On the facebook pages I see pictures of a dead dear or something. My hostdad doesn't really hunt anymore but he doe have a lot of guns... And sometime this year he is gonna take me out shooting. Sounds awesome to me!
And one other think I wanna tell you guys is something about alligators.... They do live here in the wild and because you have them here so much guess what you can eat restaurants?? Yes, alligator...... also know as gator. I haven't had it yet cause I haven't seen it at the menus yet... People say it taste like spicy chicken. I really wanna try it cause who can say in the Netherlands they ate alligator?! Everybody was suprised you can't eat it in the Netherlands but I told them it is probably illegal LOL.
Well guys I think I'm gonna wrap it up cause this blog is getting really long....... I'm sorry if I bored you with these thing but well.... Feels funny to write my blog in Englisch and I'm sure I didn't spell everything right so if people notice I'll say sorry in advance....
I love you guys and talk to ya soon. And it's only 6 more moths bitches and you'll see your country girl again! And btw if you guys wanna hear a nice country song listen to: Country girls shake it for. I love that song!!
